Bipolar - cupless Procedure

Characteristics
The Bipolar-Cupless acetabular component is rooted from the human medicine and modified for the veterinary anatomy.
It is a safe salvage solution for patients with challenging anatomic circumstances, pre-existing chronic luxations or revisions and infections. It is also an alternative method for THR patients with unusual requirements.
The indications in veterinary medicine are slightly different to those in human cases. In the veterinary field, the cupless procedure can serve as a treatment option for chronically luxated hips, patients with insufficient bone stock, cup loosening, when the previously implanted cup needs to be replaced.
The Bipolar-Cupless components are comprising a large diamond-like coated titanium outer sphere, which is articulating in the bony acetabulum and a smaller UHMW-PE inner sphere in combination with a 15mm femoral head linked on the femoral stem, acting as an additional joint inside the outer sphere.

Based on clinical experience gathered with the monopolar cupless heads with a directly in the bony acetabulum articulating sphere, the Bipolar-Cupless concept improves the clinical outcome positively and turns the threatment into a safe procedure with high successrate.
This Bipolar design therefore splits the overall hip joint motion into major and minor movement.
The 15mm femoral head covers the majourity of movements like walking and running and articulates in a polyethylene liner inside the Bipolar head. Larger movements are covered by the DLC coated outher shell by directly articulating in the acetabulum.
Extended movements:
Articulating of the outer shell
in the acetabulum
Majourity of movements:
Articulating of the 15mm head
in the outher shell inlay
Selfcentering Feature
Furthermore and importantly, the Bipolar design consisting of a slight axial shift of the center of rotation of the 15mm femoral head compared to the outer shell. The mechanical benefit is an overall self-centering mechanism of the system implant inside the bony acetabulum.
Suitable Bipolar cupless implants to get link with femoral stems of other manufacturers are available upon request.
